What you need to know about Google Meet

Google Meet is a video conferencing service from Google which has been integrated into Gmail. Gmail users can now see the new option to start a meeting using Google Meet in the left sidebar of Gmail on Web. This new feature from Google has a free version that allows up to 100 participants for each virtual meeting and hence looks to providing competition for the Zoom video conferencing app which has gained more traction during these times of social distancing and lockdowns.

It is important to mention that Google Meet was available before now to enterprises and education customers via G Suite, but has been recently made available by Google for free to everyone with a Google account.

This new Meet integration is located on the sidebar panel, and users can ‘start a meeting' or ‘join a meeting' without having to switch between apps.

Clicking on the ‘Start a Meeting’ or “Join a Meeting” feature opens up a new window. Users can choose the meeting name and share the unique URL or code with colleagues.

Google Meet, apart from via Gmail, can be accessed directly on Chrome and other modern browsers without any additional plugins. All you need to do is type mee.google.com on your browser and you can proceed to host your meeting. There is a meeting limit of 60 minutes for free users which is currently being waived until September. Just like Zoom, it also supports screen sharing but only paid users can record calls.
