The practice of accessing and integrating all aspects of our true nature -- body, mind, and spirit -- in the pursuit of inner harmony is called Yoga (meaning union or yoke) says Alexandra De CollibusAs.
Yoga has become popular in schools through its application in physical education classes and other school programs. That popularity comes with a lot of controversies. Though parents like the benefits of yoga while some feel the practice of yoga has a religious connection and like prayer, it should not be allowed in public space because of its affinity with Hinduism and it can circulate religious and meditation idea.
In spite of its controversy, yoga is helpful to children who have social, emotional and physical challenges as yoga practice that includes physical postures, breathing techniques, and behavioral guidelines are beneficial to them says De Collibus
The five key areas below are where children can benefit from the practice of yoga and each benefits improves their overall well being
It Promotes physical flexibility:
Yoga enhances physical strength as kids learn to use all of their muscles in a new way. Whatever pose that is done, either sitting, standing, sitting challenges the various muscles in the body and help the child to become aware of the functionality of his body.
It improves balance and coordination:
Balance is one of the basic ingredients of yoga. The poses helps to create and promote physical and mental poise, as stability and mental clarity comes from the efforts of trying the poses. For example a child that has difficulty in standing on a foot can learn mental and physical balance, when they do it repeatedly. Coordination is closely related to balance and help to enhance their skills.
It expands their focus and concentration:
In the act of practising the poses, it helps a child to clear their mind from any form of distraction to focus on the effort. As a result of this, it enhances their focus and help to maintain balance. Yoga helps children to maintain a high level of focus and concentration which is needed in the school for better grades.
It builds confidence and self esteem:
Yoga helps to instill confidence and serve as a building block for the future. It teaches them to be patient, persevere and work towards achieving their goals. In the act of mastering poses, it builds their self esteem and develops their confidence that the goal is achievable despite the stumbling blocks on the way to perfecting the poses.
It builds the mind-body Connection:
Yoya is capable of helping your children to achieve a sound mind in a sound body by exercising the physical body and relaxing the mental spirit. Yoga benefits children of all ages. Studies have shown that yoga benefits children with autism and ADHD. It helps to reduce the aggressive behavior, social withdrawal and hyperactivity in them.
Parents should note how yoga can benefit their children as it helps them to concentrate better, focus against distraction and pay more time to their tasks.
